Decks are easy to enjoy in the summery weather, but many people neglect their decks in the off-season. With a little care and ingenuity, there are plenty of ways to take care of and enjoy your RainAway protected deck even in the dead of winter, provided you can get used to the cold.

Don’t salt your deck

Everyone is familiar with salting driveways, sidewalks, and streets, but decks are one surface you want to avoid salting. Salt can damage the finish on decks, which will actually end up exposing the wood to more moisture over time. Instead, shovel your deck along the grain of the wood whenever you shovel other outside spaces around your house. This will allow your deck to remain moisture-free in the winter, and keep it clear for normal use!

Get creative with holiday decorations

Whether your deck is out front or in back of your house, it provides a unique opportunity to get festive! Hanging extra light strands or other festive decorations is a great way to spruce up your deck and keep it illuminated when the nights start getting dark early. Plus, if you have friends who are smokers or need to cool off at this year’s holiday party they won’t feel quite so isolated out on your festive deck!

Given the proper safety precautions, outdoor fireplaces can be a great value add to your deck for any season. In winter, they can make your deck almost as comfy as another room!
